Violas are related to pansies, producing smaller flowers but lots of them. They are ever-blooming during cool weather of spring or fall. The colour range includes blue, yellow, orange, maroon, purple and white, many with black centres. Use them to edge flower beds and for massing in containers such as window boxes and dish planters.

Start seeds 6 - 8 weeks before outdoor planting. Since plants are hardy the transplants can be set out into the garden several weeks before the last spring frost. Choose a sunny or lightly shaded location and a fertile soil that drains well. Keep faded flowers picked to prolong bloom. Improve clay or sandy soils with compost.
