The water jacket is a small box that is installed into the firebox of your wood cookstove. It is used for heating domestic hot water through an external tank such as a range boiler (similar to a hot water tank). Hot water is heated by convection and requires no electricity, which is a bonus in an off-grid situation. The system works by circulating cold water from your water source by an electric or manual pump. It then flows through the stove's plumbing and is heated through the internal firebox water jacket. The hot water flows from the water jacket and rises to the top of the insulated ranger boiler tank. From here, your water is pressurized through a pressure tank and is dispersed like a normal tap, providing you with warm or hot running water! A mixer can be installed on your plumbing lines to set your output temperature so you can control how hot or cold you want your tap water to be.
Having domestic hot water with a Heco stove and range boiler system is very similar to a regular plumbing system that utilizes gas or propane, however, the amount of hot water in your range boiler is dependent on how often and how hot you burn your stove. If you have existing plumbing in place, your Heco setup can be plumbed in. Consult the Heco manual which outlines the system setup.
