Sweat peas are noted for their pleasant fragrance, but the intensity of the fragrance can vary between varieties. This is a special selection of varieties noted for intense fragrance, many of them heirlooms. These are also among the best for use as cut flowers because of the long, strong stems. They are hardy, fast-growing annuals in a wide range of colours that include shades of red, pink, blue, maroon, orange, and white. The tall plants have tendrils that allow them to grow up on supports such as garden netting or trellises.

Direct sow seed where plants are to bloom several weeks before the last expected spring frost date or start seed indoors 4 weeks before the last frost date to obtain healthy transplants. Choose a sunny position and soil with good drainage. Sweet peas like to flower during cool weather. In areas with mild winters, like the Pacific Northwest, seed can be sown in late summer and early fall to flower extra early in the spring.
