Direct sow seed where plants are to bloom several weeks before the last expected frost date or start seed indoors 4 weeks before the last frost date to obtain healthy transplants. Choose a sunny position and soil with good drainage. Sweet peas like to flower during cool weather. In areas with mild winters, like the Pacific Northwest, seeds can be sown in late summer and early fall to flower extra early in spring.
