With 9,000 years of cultivation behind them, it is no wonder that there are a myriad of varieties in a multitude of colours available to the home gardener – all have their origins in wild species native to Central and South America.

Jalapenos are noted for their zesty hot flavour widely used in Mexican cuisine. The blunt pointed, thick-walled fruits grow about 3in (7.5cm) long, and have a deep green colour maturing to red. An eye-watering addition to salsa, salads, dips and great for pickling. Harvest regularly.

Start seeds 6 - 8 weeks before outdoor planting after all danger of spring frost. Space plants at least 18 inches apart in a sunny, fertile soil with good drainage. Improve sandy or clay soils with compost. Growing through black plastic will encourage earliest, heaviest yields.
