Start seeds 6 - 8 weeks before outdoor planting. The seedlings are hardy and can be transferred to the garden several weeks before the last expected frost date. To avoid crowding, space plants at least 3 inches apart. Thinnings can be used for scallions. Choose a sunny location and fertile soil that drains well. Improve sandy or clay soil with compost.
