Melons prefer a rich, highly organic, well-drained soil amended with generous amounts of composted manure or household compost. Select a south-facing, wind-sheltered site and sow 6 seeds per hill. Seeds need a warm soil to germinate properly. Expect germination in 5-10 days at 70F (21C). Seeds sown in soil cooler than this may fail. Feed with all-purpose fertilizer shortly after transplanting and keep the melons evenly watered throughout the growing season. Days to maturity are from the transplant stage.
