This cold-hardy cabbage relative grows about 18in (45cm) tall and is topped with attractive, light green, frilly leaves. Use the leaves mixed with other greens in salads, as cooked greens, in stews and as a garnish. The tastiest crops are timed for harvest during the cool weather of spring and autumn. Kale grows well in containers, and plants make an attractive addition to flower gardens.

Direct-sow seed several weeks before the last spring frost date as the seedlings are hardy. Choose a sunny location and fertile, well-drained soil. Make succession sowings for a continuous supply, especially in late summer for a fall and winter harvest.
