Sugar Baby is a dependable variety that produces round watermelons about 20cm (8in) in diameter that weigh roughly 4-5kg (8.8-11lb). The flesh is crisp, red, sweet and juicy with very few seeds. The skin turns dark red when fully ripe.

Culture is very similar to cantaloupe and muskmelon. Seeds require 5-10 days at a soil temperature of 24C (75F) to germinate – any lower and germination will be inhibited. Sow 6-8 seeds per hill, 12mm (1/2in) deep in hills spaced 1.8- 2.4m (6-8ft) from each other. After germination thin to 3-4 plants per hill. For best quality fruit never let the plants lack for water.
