Swiss Chard grows best in well drained soils with a pH of 6.5 to 7.5. Sow seed about 1-2cm (1/2-3/4in) deep and 2.5cm (1in) apart in rows 45cm(18in) apart starting in mid spring. Sowing seed every two weeks until early summer will ensure continuous supply. Gradually thin out seedlings to 10cm (4in) apart using the thinnings as baby greens. On older plants, harvest outer leaves first by cutting at the base of the stem then working towards the centre as you go.
