These sturdy plants grow up to 75cm (30in) in height producing large, 4-lobed, thick walled, 7-10cm (3-4in) diameter peppers that are particularly sweet and juicy – peppers average about 170g (6oz) in weight. Mature green fruit left on the plant will turn red with age and sweeten in taste even further.

Sow seed indoors in early March 2mm (1/8in) deep in a soil-less seed starting mix. Germination can take from 14 – 21 days at 22-25C (72-77F). Transplant seedlings at the second or third leaf stage into 7.5cm (3in) pots. Grow under lights with warm 24C (75F) days and cooler 16C (61F) nights. Harden off seedlings then transplant out after all risk of frost has passed – this usually occurs in late May to early June. In the garden, space plants about 90cm (36in) apart in organic, well drained soil. Full sun is essential for best results. Shelter plants from gusty winds and keep evenly watered.
