Organic Okra Seeds 4124. Heirloom Herb. Approx. 35 seeds/pkt (20 seeds/gram).

The light green pods are delicious steamed, stuffed or in soups and stews. Hibiscus-like cream coloured flowers from 5-7.5cm (2-3in) in diameter make a beautiful garnish, and the plants themselves are often used for their ornamental appeal. Okra is among the top heat-and-drought tolerant vegetables grown in the world. Tender perennial grown as an annual.

Sow seed directly outdoors in a fully sunny site in late May or early June 1.25-2cm (1/2-3/4in) deep and 2.5cm (1in) apart in rows spaced 90cm (36in) apart. Seed typically sprouts in 14-21 days. Seed can be soaked overnight before planting – this can speed up the germination to as little as 7 days. Warm soil is imperative for germination. Thin seedlings to 30-45cm (12-18in). To get a jump on the season, seed can also be started 5 weeks early indoors and then planted out after all danger of frost has passed. The pods mature quickly – they are often ready for harvest in as little as 3 to 4 days after flowering. Use a sharp knife to cut the pods from the plant when they are 5-7.5cm (2-3in) long. For best quality, harvest pods regularly.
