Homemade Pickles Organic Cucumber Seeds 4046. Open Pollinated. Approx. 65 seeds/pkt (35 seeds/gram).
Semi-bush type plants produce a large number of medium green, 12.5-15cm (5-6in) fruit with small white spines and a crisp core. This is an excellent dill pickling variety that can also be harvested at 4cm (1.5in) long for baby sweets. Pick regularly to maintain harvest – it is best to cut the cucumbers from the vine rather than twisting or pulling them off. Good disease resistance. An excellent choice for smaller gardens.

Cucumbers grow best in a wind-sheltered site with rich, warm, sandy loam. Sow seed when the danger of frost has passed and when the soil has warmed up to at least 18C (65F) – cooler soils lead to poor germination. Sow seed 1.9cm (3/4in) deep with 8 seeds per hill in hills spaced 120-150cm (4-5ft) apart. After germination, thin to 3-4 plants per hill. Harvest cucumbers by cutting them from the vine with a sharp knife. To get a jump on the season, start seed indoors in fibre pots 3 to 5 weeks before planting out. Do not plant out until early June to avoid cool nights and blossom end drop. Cucumbers are shallow rooted and need a consistent, even supply of water. Water is best applied early in the morning – this avoids creating favourable conditions for mildew on the foliage.
