Nantes Organic Carrot Seeds 4030. Heirloom Vegetable. Approx. 1,200 seeds/pkt (850 seeds/gram).
This is the variety made famous by market gardeners. Nicely shaped cylindrical roots about 17cm (7in) long are blunt ended, sweet and crunchy with almost no core. For those looking for a fast crop, Nantes matures relatively early in the summer. Due to its smooth textured skin, Nantes is an easy carrot to clean. First described in 1885 but no doubt grown before that.

Nantes will grow well in any open, well cultivated, deep garden soil. As the seed is quite small, mix it with some sand when sowing. Once soil temperature rises above 7.5C (45F), sow seed about 7-15mm (1/4-1/2in) deep in rows spaced 45-60cm (18- 24in) apart. Stagger several sowings over the next few weeks. Keep the seedbed evenly moist during the 2-3 week germination period. Avoid crusting over the soil as this will greatly reduce the number of seedlings that emerge. Thin the seedlings during the early stages of growth until they are 5cm (2in) apart. Keep the plants evenly watered and weed free, and avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers. Harvest any time after the carrot roots develop good colour.
