Have you ever looked at your favourite meal and really looked at it asking yourself, can I make that from scratch? You might be reading that and scoff thinking, "I already do make it from scratch." What I am asking is the true scratch of scratch. Let's take pizza as an example. Let's break down all the ways you can make a pizza for dinner:
- Make a call for pizza to be delivered.
- Pick up a frozen pizza and throw it in the oven.
- Purchase pre-made pizza shells and put together the toppings.
- Make your own dough and sauce, adding toppings of your choosing.
- Grinding your own flour, growing your own tomatoes, making your own mozzarella
That last line likely sounds daunting but let's break this down. We have become so reliant on grocery stores to provide us all our wants and needs that we forget we can do a lot of this ourselves. What exactly is a pizza made up of? Let's go with a margarita, one of our family favourites:
- Mozzarella Cheese
Growing our own tomatoes and basil is probably the easiest part of the ingredient list to truly make from scratch. Making your own tomato sauce may forever change your standards for pizza!
But what about the other ingredients?
Mozzarella cheese can be made at home from standard milk you purchase from the grocery store! Don't believe me? Google it. Want to take your 'from scratch' even further? What about raising your own cow, milking it and making your own cheese! Did you know that Good2GoCo sells milking products? Check out our EZ Animal Products! Another version would be to raise goats, using goat cheese on your pizza instead.
Flour - this is where we might lose most people. Some items you really do not think about coming in any other variety that what you purchase it as in the grocery store, but it is possible to grind your own flour! Again, Good2GoCo sells the Country Living Grain Mill. Growing your own grain might be a bit trickier, as there are a lot of regulations around this, but making your own dough can start by grinding your very own flour from whole wheat!
How 'from scratch' have you gone when making your own pizza? Think about your favourite meal and break it down, how 'from scratch' do you make it? Are there sauces you buy pre-made that you could be making yourself? Once you learn how to make the sauce, is there a way to pressure can it so you can make it in large quantities and store it?
Meat, poultry, dairy, and grains get a bit harder, but that does not mean that we can't 'from scratch' our own eggs from our own chickens or our own beef from our own cows. In exploring the world of homesteading more and more we can look at our plate totally differently, asking ourselves how much of what is on our plate could we truly make ourselves, grow ourselves, preserve ourselves, and raise ourselves.
Food has become more convenient, easier to cook and readily available. The 'from scratch' thinking is not new by any means; it is the original way of thinking and historically was the only way of thinking when it came to food.
Consider yourself challenged to make your favourite meal from scratch, or as scratch as you can get! Share with us how you did it and if you surprised yourself with your capabilities! What areas did you hit roadblocks in and why? If you could have more space, more resources or more money would you have been able to make more from scratch? Start with sauces and go from there. You may be surprised to learn what your favourites are made from and that homemade not only tastes better but is healthier and cheaper!
Let the 'From Scratch" challenge' begin!
May God bless you and your families,
